Four Helpful Tips to Help You Decide What to Wear for a Photoshoot

One of the most overwhelming decisions you must make after booking your session is what to wear. There are just so many things to consider when trying to plan what you should wear, let alone the rest of your family.  Are we going dressy or casual?  What colors should we wear?  What if it’s cold or rainy?  Those are just the tip of the iceberg!  Here are my top four tips to consider when deciding what to wear for your family photos.

1. Start at the end

That’s right!  Start at the end.  Where are these photos most likely to be displayed?  Let’s say these photos will most likely end up in your living room.  Great!  What is the color scheme of your living room? If your living room is primarily blues and grays, those will be the majority of the colors used in the pieces that you select.

2. Pick your clothes first

Now that you know what colors to look for, start with yourself first.  Pick a piece that you feel good in and that lets you move.  You want to feel amazing during your shoot, so it is important you love what you are wearing.  Secondly, especially if younger children are involved, we will move a lot during your session.  This means that your clothes need to allow for movement. Make sure you can bend over and sit comfortably in what you select.

3.  Coordinate outfits from there

Once your outfit is selected, coordinate the other outfits from there. If you choose a navy dress with yellow flowers on it.  You can dress another family member in jeans and a yellow top or a yellow dress. Bringing a second look to your session is a great idea for family or engagement sessions. Where the first look tends to be more classy, your second look can be more relaxed and show off your personality. If you want to add a second outfit to your family or engagement session, let me know beforehand so we can discuss the logistics of the area.

4. Keep In Mind

When selecting your coordinating outfits, keep these few things in mind. First, feel free to mix and match patterns, but keep the patterns on the smaller side.  Avoid neon/bright colors, large patterns or patterns that are too matchy-matchy, and large words and logos. We will move a bit throughout our session.  While heels may complete the look, bring a more comfortable shoe to walk around in and then change into your heels. Finally, use layers to incorporate your color scheme.

And as always, don’t hesitate to reach out to your photographer with any questions!

I know it can seem daunting to pick out outfits for your session. But once you select your first outfit, everything will fall into place after that!  If you already have your clothes picked out and are ready to show off your style, let’s schedule your session!
